Ser Jaime Lannister Squired for Barriston Selmy Agains the Kingswood Outlaws

The Kingswood Brotherhood was aninfamous outlaw system during the reign of King Aerys 2.

Operating out of the Kingswood, the Alliance gained recognition bykidnapping several noblesandevading early attempts to capture them. Ultimately, they became such a nuisance that King Aerys sent adetachment of soldiers led by notable members of the Kingsguard to destroy them.Lord Sumner Crakehalland his two squires,Jaime Lannisterand Merrett Frey, were also function of the retinue.

^ Good ol' Merrett Frey — he recounts the Kingswood Alliance battles during his epilogue chapter inStorm.

This was when Jaime was15years one-time — so information technology took identify in281 Air conditioning, before the Harrenhal Tournament.

Lord Commander Gerold Hightower was injuredin an earlier raid by the Brotherhood when theyattacked Princess Elia Martell's escort through the woods. The king'due south detachment was led past Ser Arthur Dayne instead.

^ No offense to Ser Gerold Hightower, simply he is no The Sword of The Morning.

^ The Kingsroad goes directly through the wood, and Elia and other nobles like going on long walks/rides into the state side.

Also note "Fawnton" is literally right next to the forest — which is House Cafferen's estate.

Ser Arthur Dayne'south Egalitarian Strategy

The Brotherhood wassheltered by the smallfolk of the Kingswood, preventing the royal forces from finding and ending the outlaws. Even so, Ser Arthur Daynegained the confidence of the smallfolk, who had believed that the only ones protecting their rights was the Brotherhood.

^ This is a very "Robin Hood" type of vibe — capture noble persons, bribe them, and requite the spoils to the smallfolk protecting you in the royal forest.

Arthurpetitioned the king for meliorate rights for the smallfolk and he made sure theroyal forces paid for anyitems they took from the peasantry. Arthur's actions swung the allegiance of the smallfolk to the royal forces who could now hunt the Brotherhood, as the outlaws couldno longer walk around with dispensation in the woods.

^ Shows Arthur wasn't only the all-time swordsman in the Seven Kingdoms — he was also very wise and knew how to atomic number 82 people, fifty-fifty the downtrodden.

Famous Duels

In a notable disharmonism, the immature Jaime Lannister, Ser Arthur Dayne, and Ser Barristan Selmy faced off against several notable outlaws, includingthe Grin Knightand their leader,Simon Toyne.

Barristan killed Simon, while Arthur killed the Smiling Knight. Jaime regards the battle, in which hecrossed swordswith the Grinning Knight, as ane of hisfondest memories.

^ Well yeah, a fifteen year quondam, moisture behind the ears, fighting side-by-side with Ser Arthur … no wonder he wanted to get a Knight instead of a Lord. Adept for him to get some swings in against TSK and live to tell nigh it.

Information technology was after the killings of Simon Toyne and the Grin Knight that Jaime was raised from a squire to a knight, right in that location in the Kingswood.

Barristan was rescuing theLady Jeyne Swann and hersepta, who had been a couple of the hostages still possessed by the Brotherhood at the fourth dimension.

Known Members of The Kingswood Brotehrhood

  • Simon Toyne

House Toyne was final heard from during the reign of Aegon Iv —Ser Terrence Toyne, a member of the Kingsguard, had an affair with Bethany Bracken, one of the rex's treasured mistresses — Terrence and his two brothers were murdered equally penalization — so information technology is fitting the firm had beennursing a grudge for most 100 years and were actively causing chaos and a nuisance for the Fe Throne and various nobles.

After Simon, there was Myles Toyne, who was a captain in the Gilt Company — showing that House Toyne was ganging up with the Blackfyres to seek out revenge confronting the Royal Family.

  • The Grinning Knight

Ser Jaime Lannister recalls that the Smiling Knight washis generation's Ser Gregor Clegane — "half as big, but twice equally mad".

During the time of the Kingswood Brotherhood, the Smile Knight killed Ser Victor Tyrell – cousin of Lord Mace Tyrell of Highgarden.

During the combat, hebriefly crossed swords with Jaime Lannister, but the squire held off the Grin Knight. Ser Arthur Dayne next fought an extended exchange with him until the Smiling Knight's sword broke.Arthur paused the fight and immune the outlaw to accept a fresh sword. The Grinning Knight did then, but remarked that information technology was Arthur'south famous sword Dawn that he truly desired. Arthur replied"Then yous shall have it, ser."In their second exchange, the Smiling Knight was slain by the Sword of the Morning.

^ Damn, that Arthur Dayne — benevolent fifty-fifty to outlaw knights gone insane.

Who the Smiling Knight actually was, is completely unknown.

  • Wenda the White Fawn

Many theories suggest she is a fellow member ofFirm Cafferen, whose sigil is a white fawn. They are aStormlandsbusiness firm, same as House Toyne.

She captured Merrett Frey and branded him— her trademark was branding the nobles she captured, by placing a hot iron on their donkey in the shape of a fawn.

Ser Sumner Crakehall had to ransom Merrett back, as non only was he a Frey, just Rhaegar's squire.

^ No one knows what happened to Wenda afterward, just she was non slain, on the business relationship of being a woman.

Many remember that Wenda isSepta Lemore.

  • Oswyn Longneck the Thrice Hanged

Nothing is really known near him, except he was apparently hanged three split up times.

Possibly this is hinting at aRuby-red Priest bringing himback to life, or some other person who wielded magic.

  • Big Belly Ben

BBB was going to impale Ser Sumner Crakehall, just Jaime Lannister came to his rescue at the last second.

Jaime was not able to kill BBB, merely his rescue went a long fashion to gaining him knighthood.

  • Fletcher Dick

Considered to exist the Greatest Archer Ever Known.

Hails from a village aroundStonehelm, which belongs to House Swann — another member from the Stormlands.

  • Ulmer.

The only confirmed member to nonetheless be live — he is aveteran rangerwith the Dark's Watch and appears inStorm, Banquet, andDance.

Fletcher Dick taught him how to work a bow, and he claims heput an arrow through Gerold Hightower.

Dick toostole Elia's chest of coins and her jewels.

He particularly enjoyed helping Wenda when she branded the hostages.

Conclusions

  • My guess is that Wenda, BBB, Fletcher Dick, and Thrice-Hanged all wentacross the Narrow Body of water to join the Golden Company later.
  • Like many conjecture, that is why Wenda is disguised every bit Septa Lemore — so the Blackfyres have some eyes on Young Griff while he is travelling effectually. She is with him for the gunkhole ride downwards to Volantis, and is however with him after he takes Storm'south Finish.
  • In that location could be a lot more to the KWB, merely I think they are what they appear to exist — and might have been using theransom packages to not merely fund the smallfolk, merely also the Golden Company.
  • Elia was never captured, but they damn sure tried — just got a couple valuable chests off her earlier Gerold and the rest of her retinue spirited her away. Would have been a huge bribe if they managed to go her.
  • It will be interesting to see thefull list of captives during Aerys' reign, and some other KWB members — how long were they going on for???
  • Expect to see the KWB and their connection to the Golden Company fleshed out in the final books, if we ever get them.
