What Films Are like The Dictator?

Anyone who follows Hollywood films must have seen or at least heard about The Dictator. Starring Sacha Baron Cohen as the despotic Middle Eastern ruler, General Aladeen, the film turned offensive comedy into a famous sub-genre. Filled with racist, anti-semitic jokes, vulgar, slapstick humour, and straight up buffoonery, this movie is a guilty pleasure for many.

Following the shenanigans of General Aladeen, the ruler of Wadia, he is brought to the United States to address the world regarding his country's nuclear power. But there's a nefarious plan to put him out of commission. Now he must uncover the conspiracy brewing in his own government while pretending to be a common man.

Don't be fooled by the plot; there's not a single dull moment in this film. Sadistic yet rib-tickling funny, The Dictator is a one-of-a-kind movie. If you loved it and are looking for some movies like The Dictator, take a look at the list I have collated for you.

1. Borat

Also starring Sacha Baron Cohen, Borat was one of the first films to feature the actor in a long string of movies with offensive humour. The full movie is called Borat: Cultural Learning of America for Make Benefit of Kazakhstan. It's an outlandish and insane title, which should give you an idea of the kind of movie it is. As you can see from the hilariously incorrect English, the film is about a man's journey from Kazakhstan to America, which he records on film.

The jokes in this film are off the charts. Within the first few minutes, when Borat introduces us to his little village, it becomes clear that this film won't hold back any punches. Lines like, "She is my sister. She is number four prostitute in all of Kazakhstan." as he kisses her passionately, will leave you disgusted and amused. The film is shot in a mockumentary format, making it really intriguing to watch.

With his thick accent and weird mannerisms, Borat is guaranteed to tickle your funny bone.

2. The Hangover

The names Alan, Stu, Phil, and Doug are immortalised, thanks to this comedy gold. Although, the subsequent sequels didn't hold a candle to the original.

Doug is getting married and he invites his best friends, Stu and Phil, for his bachelor party in Las Vegas. However, the bride's brother, Alan, also tags along. The four have a crazy night in the gambling capital of America, only to find Doug missing the next day. The search for their missing friends leads Stu, Phil, and Alan into some insanely comical situations.

While Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms are fantastic as Phil and Stu respectively, it's Zach Galifianakis as Alan, who's the actual star of the film. He is super funny as the quirky Alan, who's strangely adorable and yet, absolutely weird. He gives the four a new nickname - The Wolfpack, a name which has stuck with all of us ever since the movie came out.

Other than all the crazy shenanigans, the character arc of Stu is also fascinating to watch. From a docile dentist, he turns into a crazy party animal in the span of one night. Other highlights include a tiger, a baby, and a stripper. You'll understand what I'm talking about when you watch the film.

If you're looking for some capricious films like The Dictator, The Hangover should be right up your alley.

3. Ali G Indahouse

Although not as offensive as Borat or The Dictator, Ali G Indahouse is still pretty out there. Starring Sacha Baron Cohen once again, it follows the story of Ali G, a wannabe gangster living in Staines, United Kingdom. He heads a life support group for young boys. However, one day, he enters the world of politics by sheer accident. Considered the most unlikely MP candidate, his outlandish solutions actually do the trick and solve many problems faced by the country. It even puts him in the good books of the British Prime Minister!

Sacha brings his notorious style of humour once again in this satirical comedy. It's a full feature-length film like The Dictator and even features a cameo from Borat, which was achieved using CGI. There are plenty of juvenile jokes, facepalm moments, and ridiculous scenarios in this comic caper. Sasha proves time and again why he is the best when it comes to movies of this genre.

4. Harold And Kumar: Escape from Guantanamo Bay

A sequel to Harold And Kumar Go to White Castle, Escape from Guantanamo Bay takes the craziness to a whole new level. The best part is, you don't need to watch the first part to understand what's going on in this film.

The story begins with Harold finally asking out his crush and the two kissing on the elevator. Kumar urges Harold to not let her out of his sight and the two head to Amsterdam, where Harold's new girlfriend has gone for a modelling assignment. However, things go horribly wrong when the two get arrested on a plane and, in the paranoia that follows, are deemed as terrorists. This leads the stoner duo to Guantanamo Bay, the most infamous prison in the world. Well, here's where the actual adventure begins as the two get involved in some crazy situations.

Featuring full frontal nudity, drug-induced hallucinations, anti-semitic jokes, and a kooky cameo from Neil Patrick Harris, this film is a romp from start to finish. John Cho's mature portrayal of Harold acts a perfect contrast to Kalpen Patel's Kumar, who is lazy, reckless and disgusting at times.

I can't tell you how many crazy shenanigans the two get into, with each getting progressively hilarious. In closing, Harold and Kumar is a perfect addition to the niche of stoner comedy films.

5. Eurotrip

Another classic when it comes to weird comedies with plenty of sex and drugs is Eurotrip. The title is self-explanatory; it's about four high school students who go on a trip across Europe together as they encounter some truly bizarre situations.

The story follows Scotty, his best friend Cooper, and the twins, Jenny and Jamie. Scotty is not travelling just for leisure; he's determined to find his penpal Meike, with whom he has fallen in love. This search for love leads the four to some really strange situations involving rowdy football fans, nude beaches, a BDSM brothel, and the Vatican Church. Some scenes are truly so out of this world, it'll make you wonder if you're tripping or not.

Other than these highlights, the film also has a cameo from Matt Damon, who mocks Scotty in a song titled 'Scotty Doesn't Know'. In this track, he explains in explicit detail how Scotty's girlfriend Fiona has been cheating on him, while the crowd cheers on.

As you can see, subtlety is not the strong point of this film. But it's a guilty pleasure nonetheless and is riddled with cliches about Europeans and their culture. In the end, it's all harmless fun. So, sit back, relax, and prepare to burst out laughing every few minutes. Those looking for a light-hearted movie like The Dictator will not be disappointed.

6. The Interview

Seth Rogen is a well-known name when it comes to comedy cinema. But who knew James Franco was such a powerhouse performer when it comes to offensive humour? Well, it was indeed a revelation for me when these two came together in The Interview. This politically charged satirical comedy is a real gem, for it directly hits out at Kim Jong Un, the tyrannical ruler of North Korea.

The story is about Dave Skylark, a famous TV show host, played by James and his producer, played by Rogen. Always considered the laughing stock of the media business, the two are determined to air a serious episode, which will change the world's perception about them. Just then, they receive a message from North Korea that Kim Jong Un wants to be interviewed by Dave Skylark. Will the two go together to the most dangerous and mysterious country in the world? What will they find during this crazy adventure? Will they even survive this ordeal? The Interview answers all these questions and a lot more.

Props to the entire team of the film, for they ended up making Kim look like a clown. Back when it came out, it really caught a lot of media attention, for it was the time when North Korea was thumping its chest about being a nuclear nation.

7. Bruno

Sasha Baron Cohen, who has played Borat, Ali G, and General Aladeen, also starred in Bruno. The film is alternatively titled as Brüno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt.

Bruno is homosexual, and a flamboyant one at that. After being fired from his own TV show in Austria, he heads to the United States to make a living. Here, he offends almost every demographic imaginable and keeps landing in trouble. The trademark humour of Cohen is even more prominent in this feature as he goes around interviewing celebrities, juvenile models, politicians and even international terrorists. Of course, it's all done as a big joke, but some of the comedy is pretty dark and offensive, even for his standards.

After watching this film, you will certainly appreciate Sasha's consistency as a performer. He has always been a no-holds-barred comic figure, who will either leave you laughing or angry. And he has maintained that status quo throughout the years.

8. You Don't Mess With The Zohan

Speaking of inappropriate comedy films featuring middle eastern characters, You Don't Mess With The Zohan is pretty high on that list. Featuring Adam Sandler as Zohan, an Israeli counter terrorist commando, it follows his journey from the war-torn Middle East to the United States. Zohan is tired of fighting Palestinians and actually wants to be a hairdresser. After faking his own death during an encounter with the terrorists, he escapes to America to follow his dream. Here he starts a new life and even falls in love, but inevitably, his past catches up to him.

The Middle Eastern stereotypes in this film are so bad that they end up being hilarious. From goat obsession to calling hummus a "diarrhoea like substance", Adam Sandler and director Mike Dugan push the envelope when it comes to offensive humour. However, it ultimately preaches peace between people of all cultures, so these transgressions can be laughed off and ignored.

9. This Is The End

Out of all the film on this list, This Is The End is probably the most unique. In this flick, Hollywood celebrities play themselves during an end of the world scenario. James Franco hosts a massive New Year's party at his Hollywood mansion, attended by almost all big names in the industry, including Seth Rogen and his commoner friend.

However, things go to hell quite literally when the Biblical phenomenon called 'The Rapture' takes place. All the good people are beamed up to heaven, and all the sinners are left to rot on Earth with demons. Unfortunately, all celebs fall into the sinners' category, with most being swallowed into a massive sinkhole that appears outside Franco's house. Now, James, Seth, and his commoner friend, Jonah Hill, and few remaining survivors must figure out a way to escape this nightmare.

Filled with cuss words, ridiculous violence, and some ear-shattering screams from celebs who are scared senseless, This Is The End is a delight from start to finish. While the central characters will keep you hooked with their silly antics, there are also endless cameos, including that of Emma Watson, Rihanna, Paul Rudd, Channing Tatum, and Danny McBride. The film makes a mockery out of everything - the Christian concept of Rapture, the celebrities, and their elitist attitude, and all survival films featuring the end of the world.
